Join IFA in Welcoming Abenezer Tesfaye,

Our New Animal Project Coordinator in Ethiopia

IFA is excited to announce the addition of Abenezer Tesfaye to the IFA team in Ethiopia, and to highlight the many efforts and qualities that he has displayed over the years on behalf of animals. Currently finished his fifth and final year as a veterinary medical student at Addis Ababa University's College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture (CVMA), Abenezer has become a specialist in small animal surgery and animal behavior. In addition to his strong veterinary background, Abenezer has been personally interested and engaged in animal welfare since his childhood. More recently, he has served as the chairman of the CVMA's Club for Animal Welfare; the founder of the college's Charity and Good Citizenship project; and as a participant in a behavioral training program hosted by the CDC, AAU, and USAID. In 2012, he also prepared a photo exhibition at the veterinary college, portraying animal abuse that has occurred across Ethiopia.

As IFA's new animal project coordinator, Abenezer will help organize and establish a veterinary clinic in Addis Ababa, coordinating a wide-reaching rescue program for homeless dogs, and completing his own thesis research on rabies and the significance of veterinary public health by utilizing his experiences with IFA.

IFA Co-founder Dr. Anteneh Roba Featured

on Worldwide Blog Talk Radio

IFA President and Co-founder, Dr. Anteneh Roba, recently gave an interview for the worldwide blog talk radio station program, "Human Experience." During the interview, he fielded questions about a vegan diet from a health perspective, speaking more specifically about the benefits of a plant-based diet for the prevention of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Roba also briefly introduced IFA's humanitarian work in Africa, and stressing efforts to inform and educate the people of rural African villages and towns about the benefits of a plant-based diet.

Concentrating on the topic of health and medical issues facing families today, "Human Experience" asked Roba how to best help those who are searching for a better diet to achieve and maintain better health for themselves and their families. Roba explained that many of the chronic conditions people suffer from can be counteracted or prevented by choosing a well-balanced, plant-based diet, rather than following a diet rich in animal proteins. He encouraged all individuals to schedule yearly checkups to ensure that diabetes and cardiovascular diseases were diagnosed early, especially if their family histories indicated those diseases to have a higher occurrence among family members.

For those wishing to transition to a plant-based diet, Roba recommended that they slowly cut out meat and fish over time, gradually substituting foods not based on animal proteins in their stead. For someone already being treated for diabetes or another metabolic disorder, consultation with his/her physician should always come before making any dietary changes.

Medical Equipment Donations Needed for Mahal Meda Hospital

IFA is seeking donations of medical equipment to be used for the secondary eye unit at Mahal Meda Hospital, the hospital to which many patients from the Zemero Health Center are referred. The hospital only recently began conducting emergency surgeries this year, and suffers from shortages in vital medical tools and equipment. Among other items, the Mahal Meda Hospital is in need of a slit lamp microscope, autorefractometer, dry heat autoclave, operating microscope, and operating table, as well as multiple ophthalmoscopes, Snellen visual charts, stretchers, trolleys, surgeon revolving stools, and cataract sets.

Thus far, a wealthy Ethiopian individual has generously committed to providing Mahal Meda Hospital with funds for most of the equipment. For a full list of items needed, please contact us at All donations will help alleviate the suffering of those who have nowhere else to turn.
